Native American clans used their 'telling stones.' The closer that the sunrise beams came to that stone, the nearer spring was and the time to plant crops.

what I like about this haiku is that its regionally specific. writing to an international audience, folk seem tempted to inhabit 'haiku land'. grounding it somewhere more specific only takes is a brief explannation. nicely done.
