One time I was stripping wallpaper under the stairs in a 100 year old terraced house. I think the original layer was still there. It had been simply papered over, over and over again. I was struck by the overwhelming smell of pipe tobacco. It was as if someone was under the stairs with me. I had to open all the windows.
